URBAN CROQUET RULES:

Rules & Reference Guide

Urban Croquet Rules and Reference Guide

These rules were created in an ad hoc fashion by an ad hoc committee.  The imperfections reflect our human nature and only are exploited to the lengths that are clearly in jest or to the advancement in the utter domination of another team on the internationally respected field of battle that is Urban Croquet in Columbus, Ohio.

Each team shall consist of four (4) players.

The entrée fee of $60.00 shall be paid by each team before start of game.

Partial proceeds from 2007 Urban Croquet in the Short North will go to support the 25th Annual Doo Dah Parade, Friday, July 4th, 2008.

Ten Rules of Urban Croquet

1.   The Official Ruler; Doug, The Emperor of the Short North; ruling is final.

2.   Order of Play

A.  3 balls of different color will be chosen by “undershirt”” lottery at the beginning of each round.

B.  Teams will be 1st/4th; 2nd/5th; 3rd/6th in rotation.

C.  Each team will be composed of a minimum of four players per round.

D.  No team member may play more than one ball in a round, or take more than one turn consecutively in rotation.

E.   Out of turn play results in the loss of turn.  Contacted balls replaced by officials.

3.   1 hour time limited will be imposed on the first round of play, :45 minutes to second round, :30 minutes to third round, and the final will be untimed.

A.  A team’s total passed wickets will be added together to determine the winning team if time expires.

B.  Incase of a tie, sudden death for the next wicket passed (in same rotation) will be played by the tied teams to determine the winner.

C.  The Boundary line is out.  All balls in play must remain inside the line.

4.   Misuse or abuse of equipment (slamming mallets, etc.) will be cause for ejection from the game.

5.   Time outs don’t exist.  Only team members (of same color ball) may be designated at the discretion of the official as Designated Stroker.

6.   Players shall respect the course of play, and stay the heck out of the way of the ball.

7.   Gaining additional strokes:

A.  Team mate’s ball is neutral.

B.  One stroke will be granted for passing through wicket.

C.  TWO strokes will be granted for contacting a non-team member’s ball.  Strokes are only granted once per half of the field vs. any one ball, i.e. only once before and once after the “wicket for point” has been passed.  (revised this rule 10/15/09)

D.  In any situation a player may not carry more than two strokes.

E.   A contacting ball may not be “placed” via “mallet head technique” through a wicket for points or for additional strokes.

8.   Contacting another ball:

A.  If a non-team member’s ball is contacted:

I. Two strokes are awarded.

II. If stroked ball goes out of bounds turn ends.

III.            With the first stroke the player may send (“roquet”) the opponent’s ball, and take one stroke or;

IV.           player may take a “mallet head” distance from the contacted ball, and continue play.

V.           A contacted ball may be sent through a wicket-additional strokes are awarded.  The wicket pass counts for the “sent” ball.

B.  If a non-team member’s ball is contacted and “resides” OUT OF BOUNDS:

I. The contacted ball is replaced by the official inbounds in a playable position at point of exit.

II. The stroker repositions the stroked ball 1 mallet head distance from contacted ball in a direction of his/her choice and the turn is over.

Note:  After a Non-team member’s ball is contacted, the position of the stroked ball is irrelevant since the stroked ball is always repositioned to the point of the contacted ball.

9.   Grand final match:  Winning team in non-time limited game passes both their ball through all wickets strikes starting stake.  All other rules apply.

     10.   Play will continue regardless of strike, riot or insurrection.

11.  Cheating is permitted, getting caught is not… a one stroke penalty will be imposed.
